The subjects in the book entitled ‘Tissue and Protoplast Culture in Grain Legumes’ are findings of a research work on tissue and protoplast culture for morphogenetic potential of soybean, an important grain legume. Because of the soybeans have various uses, this theme has a great importance to assess the soybean species and their genotypes for in vitro morphogenesis. Tissue culture itself is a collection of techniques used to maintain and/or grow the plant cells, tissues, organs or small plant parts on a nutrient medium under aseptic and controlled environmental conditions. This book contains seven chapters with relevant data, figures and references cited in the text. The introduction has pointed out the purpose of investigation and objectives of the theme. The previous reports on tissue and protoplast culture of grain legumes with special reference to soybeans have recognized and stated. The materials and methods covers the taxonomic description of soybean plant; and methodology like explant, callus and suspension cultures; protoplast isolation and culture; hardening of the regenerated plantlets to soil; histology of morphogenetic tissues; and statistical analysis. The results of in vitro culture in soybean species and their genotypes have documented for callusing/shoot organogenesis/embryogenesis, suspension cultures and effect of sub-culturing for efficiency. The elongation of shoot buds/shoots and rooting to form plantlets have described. Histology of differentiating cultures have done showing the pattern of differentiation. Successful method of isolation and culture of protoplasts to plant regeneration have mentioned. The data have interpreted with previously published works in soybean covering all aspects as observed. The entire theme has summarized showing the status of investigation and its significant contribution. I am sure the contents given in this book will prove helpful to the students, teachers and researchers interested in plant biotechnology of grain legumes.
